From the Barrel of my Fountain Pen
The poetry that is painted
from the barrel of my pen
is hidden in the ink
and in its rich scent
The barrel of my pen holds
a thousand sparks, ideas, and dreams
that unwritten verse that overwhelms me
and travels toward northern horizons
The poetry that is painted
from a mountainous canyon
the ink forms the flora and fauna
of the wild and dangerous countryside
A Rocky Mountain canyon
inspiring a thousand sparks, ideas, and dreams
strong as a butterfly’s wings
bringing them from southerly directions
Del cañón de mi pluma estilográfica
La poesía que se pinta
del cañón de mi pluma
se esconde en la tinta
que al verso perfuma
El cañón de mi pluma
guarda mil chispas, ideas y sueños
ese verso no escrito que me abruma
y viaja a rumbos norteños
La poesía que se pinta
de un cañón montañoso
flora y fauna se forman de su tinta
del paisaje salvaje y peligroso
Un cañón de las Montañas Rocosas
inspirando mil chispas, ideas y sueños
fuertes como alas de mariposas
que llegan de rumbos sureños

Roots from the Land of Enchantment
Nicolás Cabrera is a Neomexicano (New Mexican) writer who holds several undergraduate and graduate degrees. He grew up in a bilingual household in the historic Los Griegos neighborhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Spanish has been spoken for centuries. He writes poetry and prose in both English and Spanish. It is important for him to write in Spanish to keep the language and culture of his family and community alive. Ecos Neomexicanos, his first bilingual poetry book, was honored with several awards, including best Spanish language book in the 2019 New Mexico—Arizona Book Awards. His poem La yerbabuena (The Mint Plant) won first place in the poetry category in a national communications contest sponsored by the National Federation of Press Women in 2015. He shared his poetry during an interview of “Espejos de Aztlán” broadcast on KUNM, a New Mexico public radio station.
Currently he works as a librarian and his work has been published in Mexico and the United States.
Raíces que provienen de la Tierra del Encanto
Nicolás Cabrera es un escritor neomexicano con estudios de licenciatura y maestría. Se crió en una casa bilingüe en el vecindario histórico de Los Griegos en Alburquerque, Nuevo México, donde el español ha sido hablado por siglos. Nicolás escribe poesía y prosa tanto en inglés como en español. Para él, escribir en español es importante porque mantiene viva la lengua y cultura de su familia. Ecos Neomexicanos, su primera colección de poesía bilingüe, ha recibido varios premios, incluyendo el premio al mejor libro en español de Nuevo México—Arizona en 2019. Su poema, La yerbabuena, ganó el primer lugar en el concurso de la Federación Nacional de Mujeres Periodistas en EE. UU. en el año 2015. Nicolás compartió su poesía durante una entrevista en el programa “Espejos de Aztlán” transmitido en la cadena de radio pública KUNM.
Actualmente él trabaja como bibliotecario y sus obras han sido publicadas en México y Estados Unidos.
